PETA is asking Slaughter Beach officials to change the town's name to something kinder and more positive. In a Tuesday press release, the animal advocacy nonprofit suggested Slaughter Beach become Sanctuary Beach to reflect its status as an official horseshoe crab sanctuary. The town's name has two differing origin stories: It was named for former postmaster John Slaughter or it began with a miscommunication between Native Americans and Dutch settlers in the 1600s.
