Plane Crash in Lafayette, Louisiana Leaves Five Dead, Two Injured

Five people were killed and two others injured after a small, twin-engine plane crashed near a Walmart and U.S. Post Office in Lafayette, Louisiana, Saturday morning, authorities said.

The small eight-passenger plane took off from the Lafayette Regional Airport with six people on-board, and crashed shortly after take off at around 9:22 a.m. local time. Officials with the Lafayatte Fire Department said the plane hit a car when it crashed, injuring the driver inside.

According to a tweet from the Acadian Ambulance company, one plane crash survivor and the driver were transported to local hospitals for treatment of "severe burns."

Representatives with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Travel Safety Board will investigate the circumstances behind the crash.

"We’re securing the scene for the initial response team," Lafayette Fire Department spokesman Alton Trahan told NBC News. "They’re doing their assessment. Once they’re done with their assessment then we’ll know the next steps."

Data from the National Weather Service showed weather conditions around the Lafayette Airport were foggy on Saturday morning with a listed visibility of 0.75 miles.

The cause of the crash is unknown as of Saturday morning.
